Helping children Discover the Power of Reading

Our small group reading program is designed for students in grades 1-6 to give them the skills and strategies they need to become more confident and successful readers.

How does it work?

Before the group sessions begin, your child will come in for a complimentary assessment. This assessment will look in-depth at your child’s literacy skills and give us a good idea of where their strengths and needs are. Although this assessment will be as comprehensive as possible, we also keep it informal and casual to put kids at ease. There will be time for movement breaks, games, and some treats.

After the initial assessment, your child will be carefully matched with two other students based on skill level, age, and personality. Working in small groups of three will allow for individualized support for each child while providing the added benefits of a group dynamic including:

  • Peer learning and collaboration

  • Increased motivation engagement

  • Encouragement and support

HOME PROGRAM

home program.jpg

What makes us unique is our strong partnerships with parents and our incredible home program. We believe that the success of a child depends on the success of their parents. You will always be your child’s most important teacher, so when we work with your child, we also work to set you up for success. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and skills you need to support your child at home and throughout their educational career. Our self-developed home program makes it easy for you to reinforce the skills learned at home.

How does it work?

After each lesson, we will send homework to do with your child that is engaging, easy-to-to, and effective. We use simple language to guide you through the lessons step-by-step, and we give you teaching tips, strategies, and key concepts so that you can use the program with confidence to better support your child. The lessons are laid out in sequence and can be done anywhere with an Internet connection on a laptop or iPad.

And... we're always here to help! This work is our passion. When you work with us, you can be rest assured that we've got your back. Because we only take on a limited number of students at a time, we're able to make ourselves available to answer questions and offer support whenever you need it!

TUTORING SESSIONS

Once your child has been placed in their group, they will come in once a week for their tutoring sessions. At The Reading Room, we believe that learning needs to be fun! We deliver our lessons using a multi-sensory research-based approach and use games and activities to keep kids motivated and engaged in their learning.

Over the 10-week program, we will guide your child through increasingly difficult concepts and skills in a gradual way that ensures they are well-supported and never feel overwhelmed. Based on the needs of your child, we'll target skills such as phonological awareness, decoding, sight word recognition, morphology, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
